New Delhi: The southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala on Sunday against the normal date of onset that is June 1, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The weather office added the southwest monsoon has thus set in over Kerala three days ahead of its normal date.
“Southwest Monsoon has set in over Kerala today, the 29th May against the normal date of onset, the 1st June. Thus the Southwest Monsoon has set in over Kerala three days ahead of its normal date. Detailed press release will be available soon,” the IMD tweeted.
Senior IMD scientist R.K. Jenamani said all conditions are fulfilled for the onset of monsoon over Kerala.
“Hence, the IMD has advanced monsoon over entire south Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep area and most parts of Kerala. Conditions are now further favourable to cover more parts of central Arabian Sea,” ANI quoted Jenamani as saying.
The IMD had earlier said the southwest monsoon will reach Kerala in the next two to three days.

The weather office in a series of tweets said the conditions are becoming favourable for the advancement of monsoons.
“Hence, conditions are becoming favorable for monsoon onset over Kerala during next 2-3 days. Further conditions are also favourable for advance of Southwest Monsoon into some more parts of Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep area during the same period,” the IMD tweeted earlier on Friday.
The IMD had earlier said the onset of monsoon over Kerala is declared if 60 percent of 14 weather stations in Kerala and Lakshadweep receive 2.5 mm or more rainfall over two consecutive days along with favourable windfield.
The weather office had earlier predicted the onset of monsoon over Andaman and Nicobar Islands on May 16.
