Mob Attacks Priests Outside Former CM Biplab Deb's Residence In Tripura, Vandalises Vehicles

The priests were attacked outside the home of former Tripura CM Biplab Kumar Deb in Tripura's Gomati district. The priests came to the MP's residence to perform a Yajna in the annual Shradh ceremony.

Unidentified people attacked priests outside the ancestral home of former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb in Udaipur in Gomati district in Tripura late Tuesday night, as reported by the news agency ANI. The incident occurred at a time when a group of priests arrived at Deb's residence at Rajdhanagar in the Jamjuri area of Udaipur, ANI reported.

The priests came to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha MP's residence to perform a yagna to mark the annual shradh ceremony of Deb's father on Wednesday. The miscreants attacked the saints and vandalised their vehicles. The bystanders and locals came to the rescue of the priests following which the miscreants fled away, ANI reported.

"I came to visit Maa Tripura Sundari temple. Here I came on instructions of our Gurudev ji to overlook the preparations of the Yagna to be performed on Wednesday. Suddenly a mob came they attacked me and vandalised my vehicle. They shouted either there will be CPI(M) or none," said Jitendra Kaushik, whose vehicle was damaged, as quoted by ANI.

Local people started a protest over the incident. Meanwhile, protesters vandalised shops believed to be of the attackers. Following this, heavy deployment of police personnel was made. Udaipur Sub Divisional Police Officer Nirupam Debbarma and Additional Superintendent of Police Debanjana Roy rushed to the spot to tackle the situation.

According to a PTI report, one person was arrested for his alleged involvement in the clash.

Quoting Udaipur SDPO Dutta, the report said a suo motu case has been registered and investigation startred into the incident. "The situation is now under control, and one person has been arrested. The investigation is on,” he said.

A four-day yagna on the death anniversary of Deb's father was to begin on Wednesday at their ancestral house in Jamjuri.

According to the report, BJP activists had decorated the house and the surrounding area, while a group of CPM supporters also put up party flags for a programme there.

“Some of CPI(M) flags were allegedly found torn and thrown away, following which the clash broke out near the ancestral house of Deb. One vehicle owned by a guest of Deb was allegedly torched by the CPI(M) supporters during the clash and two BJP activists suffered injuries,” the SDPO told PTI.

Following this, he added, angry BJP activists set on fire four shops belonging to CPM workers in the village.
