New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday expressed grief over the loss of lives due to a bridge collapse in Mizoram.


At least 17 workers were killed and several others were feared trapped after an under-construction railway bridge collapsed near the Sairang area of the northeastern state on Wednesday, reported PTI.   


In a social media post, Rahul Gandhi urged Congress workers to provide all possible help in relief and rescue efforts.


"Deeply saddened by the tragic news of the death of several people due to the collapse of an under construction railway overbridge in Mizoram. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families. Wish a speedy recovery to those injured," Gandhi said on microblogging site X.


"I urge Congress workers to provide all possible help in relief and rescue efforts," he added.






President Droupadi Murmu also extended her deepest condolences to all the families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.  


"Distressed to know that a tragic bridge mishap in Mizoram caused loss of lives. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured," Murmu said on social media platform X.






Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs. 50,000 for the injured.


PM Modi took to X, formerly Twitter, and said, "Pained by the bridge mishap in Mizoram. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. Rescue operations are underway and all possible assistance is being given to those affected. An ex gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. Rs. 50,000 would be given to the injured".
