New Delhi: India on Thursday reiterated its commitment to securing the swift release of 20 Indian nationals employed in supportive roles within the Russian military.
Addressing a weekly press conference, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed India's proactive efforts towards facilitating the early discharge of these individuals. Jaiswal said, " We have an understanding that 20-odd people are stuck. We are trying our level best for their early discharge. We have issued two statements which you saw.”
Underlining India's commitment to the well-being and safety of its citizens, Jaiswal urged against involvement in conflict zones and reiterated India's proactive stance in ensuring their return.
“We've also told people not to venture into the war zone or get caught into situations which are difficult. We are in regular touch with Russian authorities both here in New Delhi and also in Moscow,” Jaiswal said.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by these individuals, including reports of their involvement in military activities along Russia's border with Ukraine, Jaiswal assured continued support and engagement.
Earlier this week, the MEA announced the successful discharge of several Indian nationals upon India's formal request. Reaffirming India's dedication to resolving such cases promptly, the MEA emphasised its “top priority” in actively pursuing these matters with Russian authorities.
Responding to queries regarding Indian citizens' safety in Israel, Jaiswal clarified that no individuals have travelled to the country following the establishment of recent inter-governmental mobility frameworks.
Speaking on India’s stand on Russia-Ukraine conflict, Jaiswal said, "Our position is well known. We have said this at various levels, at the highest levels, that India desires that there be discussion, diplomacy, there be constant engagement so that both sides can come together and find a solution for peace. So our position is maintained. That is our position.”
