New Delhi: A massive fire broke out in the pharmacy department of Kolkata Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday around 7:40 am. At least 10 fire tenders and Kolkata Police have rushed to the spot. All the patients at the hospital are safe and no reports of loss of life or injuries have came into light so far. The rescue operations are underway and the security personnel are still trying to evacuate those stuck inside. Fire tenders are trying their best to dose the fire and control the situation. As soon as the fire broke, patients and their relatives rushed out of the building to save themselves. According to preliminary reports, some patients have been shifted to other blocks while others could be seen lying on road. More than 200 people have been rescued so far. According to fire department officials, a short-circuit in the pharmacy department led to the incident.

The Kolkata Medical College and Hospital also known as Calcutta Medical College is one of the oldest hospitals of Kolakata established way back in 1948.

This is for the second time that an incident of fire has been reported in Kolkata in the last one month. Earlier on September 16, a multi-story building in famous Bagri Market in Kolkata was set ablaze on fire which gutted over 1,000 shop and business offices. As many as 30 fire engines were immediately sent to spot to douse the high blazes which kept raging for over 10 hours. Located in the trading hub of Burrabazaar in Kolkata’s central business district, Bagri market is 100-year-old building with six-floors. The market is popular centre of shopping for items of daily use including cloths, toys etc.

Losses due to the massive fire destroyed properties worth Rs 25 crore. There are as many as 1,000 shops which includes both registered and unregistered outlets. The report also stated that the adjacent areas to the Canning Street were also affected.
