New Delhi: The day marks the 74th death anniversary of the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi. The day is observed as Martyr's Day every year to honour the sacrifices of those who laid their lives for the nation. The day is also known as the Savoday Diwas on a national level. 


On January 30, 1948, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi, was assassinated by Nathuram Godse. On this day, people of the country remember the non-violent regression against the British monarchy. 


On the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to the father of the nation, also known as Bapu via Twitter. “Remembering Bapu on his Punya Tithi. It is our collective endeavour to further popularise his noble ideals. Today, on Martyrs’ Day, paying homage to all the greats who courageously safeguarded our nation. Their service and bravery will always be remembered,” he tweeted.






Congress MP Rahul Gandhi also paid homage to Bapu by visiting the Raj Ghat. he tweeted, “A Hindutvawadi shot Gandhiji. All Hindutvawadis feel that Gandhiji is no more. Where there is truth, Bapu is still alive there!”






Rahul Gandhi also tweeted a quote by the Mahatma, “‘When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible but in the end, they always fall. Think of it always.’ - Mahatma Gandhi.”


Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tributes by tweeting, “Mahatma Gandhi instilled the spirit of Swadeshi, Swabhasha, and Swaraj in the heart of every Indian. His thoughts and ideals will always inspire every Indian to serve the nation. Today, on the death anniversary of revered Bapu, I pay tribute to him.”






Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid tribute to the Mahatma. He wrote, “I bow to Mahatma Gandhi on his ‘punyatithi’. On Martyrs’ Day, I pay my heartfelt tributes to all freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the country.”






Union Minister for Education and Skill Development, Dharmendra Pradhan also tweeted, “Homage to Mahatma Gandhi ji on his Punyatithi. His ideals continue to guide and motivate millions across the world. This Martyrs’ Day, let us recall the valiant sons and daughters of India who sacrificed their lives for India’s freedom. #AmritMahotsav”






Reminiscing the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri tweeted, “I join the nation in paying tribute to the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi Ji on his death anniversary. The apostle of peace & non-violence, the Mahatma led our freedom struggle from the forefront & continues to inspire us in our journey into the future.”
