Mumbai: After large-scale violence marred a state-wide protest, the Maratha Kranti Morcha (MKM) has called for Mumbai shutdown. Maratha agitation took a violent on Tuesday as the Maharashtra Bandh witnessed incidences of stone-pelting, vandalism and heckling of political leaders. A constable deployed near the funeral venue of the protester who jumped to death yesterday died. Police said the cause of death is yet to be ascertained.

  1. The organizers have said that the strike in Mumbai would be a peaceful one as schools and colleges would remain open and not be included in it.

  2. Another organization known as the Sakal Maratha Samaj called for a bandh in Navi Mumbai and Panvel as well.

  3. Shiv Sena has said that it does not support Mumbai bandh. They do not want the life of common people to be disrupted.

  4. Quotas for Marathas, a politically influential community that constitutes around 30 percent of the state's population, has been a hugely contentious issue.

  5. The Maratha community has been demanding 16 percent quota under OBC category in government jobs and education. Marathas have been organizing protest rallies since last year to push for their demand.

  6. The Maratha Reservation matter is currently pending before the Bombay high court and it is yet to present a final judgment on the reservation.
