The National flag flew at half mast across government buildings in the country as the nation mourns the loss of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The veteran economist who spearheaded economic reforms in the country died at the age of 92 in New Delhi.
Following his demise, the Central government declared a seven-day state mourning as a mark of respect to the former PM. "During this period the National Flag will be flown at half-mast throughout India where it is regularly flown," said the Centre in a statement on Thursday.
Rashtrapati Bhavan and Congress headquarters in Delhi flew the Tricolour at half-mast.
The National Flag flew half mast at other places as well including Telangana Secretariat, Maharashtra Mantralaya, Karnataka Vidhana Soudha, and Uttarakhand State Secretariat.
As per the Government circular, the seven-day mourning will be observed from December 26 till January 1, 2025, with both days inclusive. Apart from flying the National Flag at half mast, all official entertainment will also remain suspended during this duration.
The National Flag will fly at half mast on the day of the funeral in all Indian Missions and High Commissions of India abroad.
The Centre also announced that the last rites will be held with full state honours.
According to Congress leaders, Singh's funeral is likely to take place on Saturday.
