Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud expressed strong condemnation and deep concern over a recent incident in Manipur, where a video emerged showing two women being paraded naked in a region facing communal strife. The Supreme Court, led by CJI Chandrachud, addressed the issue, stating that such actions were "simply unacceptable" and amounted to the "grossest of constitutional abuse."
The video, which came to light yesterday, has sparked outrage and shock across the nation. The Supreme Court expressed its distress and discomfort with the content of the video and urged the government to take immediate action in response to this grave incident.
CJI Chandrachud emphasized that using women as instruments in areas of communal tension is not only a violation of their dignity and human rights but also an affront to the principles of constitutional democracy. Asserting the urgency of the situation, the Supreme Court stated that if the government fails to take appropriate action in response to this disturbing incident, the court will intervene to ensure justice prevails.

The main accused, Khuyrum Heradas, in the Manipur naked parade case, was arrested by authorities on Thursday wee hours. The shocking incident came to light through a viral video shot on May 4, which depicted two women being paraded naked in Kangpokpi district, amid the backdrop of ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki tribes over the Meiteis' demand for Scheduled Tribes (ST) status.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh assured the people that stringent action would be taken against all those involved in the heinous act. The government has also been considering the possibility of capital punishment for the perpetrators, reflecting the gravity of the offence.
The arrest of Khuyrum Heradas, 32, took place in Thoubal district after law enforcement authorities identified him as the main culprit through the video evidence. The incident had caused widespread shock and anger, prompting an urgent investigation into the matter.
