Manipur Being Discussed Internationally, But Not In Our Country, It's A Shame: Jaya Bachchan

Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan opined that Manipur is being discussed internationally but not in India as she claimed that the Government "does not want discussion" in Parliament.

Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan on Monday accused the Modi government of not addressing the Manipur crisis in the parliament saying that the state is being discussed internationally but not in our country and claimed that the Government "does not want discussion". Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned for the day as opposition members continued to demand a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the ethnic violence in Manipur.

"Manipur is being discussed internationally, but not in our country, what more can I say? It's a shame. They (Government) do not want discussion. The states they are speaking about in the House are their strong opponents, but what about your states Uttar Pradesh and MP? They should explain what is happening in their states too. Anyway, there's not much left for them and whatever is left won't last for very long,” Jaya Bachchan remarked.

Earlier in the day, leaders of several opposition parties staged a protest in the Parliament complex demanding that Prime Minister Modi make a statement in the House on the Manipur issue. The leaders held placards and banners that read INDIA for Manipur and INDIA demands PM's statement on Manipur. The opposition parties also raised slogans against the government near Mahatma Gandhi's statue in the Parliament complex.

On the other hand, Home Minister Amit Shah said that he was willing to hold a discussion in Lok Sabha on the situation in Manipur and asked why the opposition was not ready for it.

Addressing Lok Sabha briefly, he requested opposition leaders to allow debate, saying that it was important for the truth to come out before the country on the Manipur issue.

After the House reassembled at 2.30 pm after three earlier adjournments over the Manipur issue, Shah said that leaders from ruling as well as opposition parties had been wanting to hold a discussion on the Manipur issue.

However, the members continued with their protest demanding a statement by PM Modi and Speaker Om Birla adjourned the proceedings for the day.
