New Delhi: Manipur BJP leader Laishram Rameshwor Singh has been shot dead by two unidentified armed assailants near his residence in Thoubal district on Tuesday, officials said. The Thoubal district police stated that the miscreants fired two bullets.






Police said the incident took place between 10.30 and 11.30 am.


Unidentified persons came in a car without a registration plate and shot at Singh from a close range, a police officer said.


The 50-year-old man received a bullet injury on his chest, he said.


Bharatiya Janata Party Manipur strongly condemned "this inhumane act" and said, "the perpetrators of this heinous crime must be brought to justice & punished accordingly."


Taking to Twitter, Manipur BJP wrote, "Anguished to learn about the murder of L. Rameshwor Singh, State Convenor of Ex-Servicemen Cell. We strongly condemned this inhumane act. The perpetrators of this heinous crime must be brought to justice & punished accordingly. We have lost a dedicated karyakarta."






According to India Today, he was admitted to Raj Medicity after the incident but succumbed to his injury at around 1 pm. Later, his body was taken to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences for post-mortem. 


BJP state unit vice president Ch Chidananda Singh told PTI, “We strongly condemn this cowardly act… Culprits should be nabbed at the earliest and stringent action should be taken against them.”


Rameshwor, the general secretary of Manipur BJP’s ex-servicemen cell, had retired from the Indian Army and was a member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).


The police have launched an investigation to apprehend the culprits.
