Following the heavy rain and flood in Maharashtra’s Nagpur, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visited the flood-affected areas on Sunday. Fadnavis took stock of the situation in the district since the floods hit the area after the Ambazari Lake, the largest water body in the city, breached its boundaries and inundated the low-lying areas. The Deputy CM interacted with the flood-affected families. To review the rehabilitation efforts, Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari chaired a meeting on Saturday night.
As the water drained out of their homes, people could see the damage it caused. Several houses had water and muck stuck inside, kitchen utensils and furniture were damaged and scattered about.
A local, while speaking to news agency ANI, said that it looked as if a mini river had formed around their house and the depth was so much that even the gate wasn’t visible. She added that her family had suffered a lot of damage and did not know how to recover from it. “I have only seen this kind of situation on TV, like floods in Mumbai. This was my first time experience and it was very scary. From all three sides, water was coming and it felt like a mini river had been formed here. The gate to our home was immersed underwater and was not visible... We helped our tenants... We have no idea how to recover from this loss,” the woman was quoted as saying by ANI.
Several vehicles were destroyed in the floods.
On Saturday, Nagpur witnessed extremely heavy rainfall of 109 millimetres in three hours, including 90 mm between 2 AM and 4 AM, inundating several areas of the city. While more than 400 people were evacuated to higher areas, the National Disaster Management Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Management Force (SDRF) also carried out rescue operations in some places. However, four persons, including a 53-year-old paralysed woman died in rain-related incidents.
