A pregnant woman died during delivery at a hospital in Maharashtra’s tribal-dominated Palghar district.
On Tuesday night, Kunta Vaibhav Padvale who hails from Galtare village in Vikramgad taluka was rushed to a local hospital after she went into labour. The nine-month-pregnant woman, 31, was then taken to the government-run Patangshah Cottage Hospital in Jawhar. However, she died in the middle of delivery.
Medical Superintendent Bharat Mahale of Jawhar Hospital stated that the tribal woman suffered a heart attack during delivery and passed away. Despite efforts, the doctors were unable to save the baby. Mahale said that the woman’s body had been sent for post-mortem.
22-Year-Old Mother Dies After Giving Birth
This comes just days after a 22-year-old tribal woman died in the district after giving birth in December after she didn’t receive timely treatment for post-delivery complications.
According to The Times Of India (TOI), Asha Namdev Bhusara lived in a hamlet in Mokhada was admitted to a local hospital around 9 am on December 26. She soon gave birth but developed postpartum haemorrhage—a complication seen in one in 100 women after delivery that causes excessive bleeding. It is one of the leading causes of maternal deaths in India, with roughly 12,000 women dying because of it each year.
As the centre was ill-equipped to treat such emergencies, her relatives were told to take her to a government hospital in Jawhar, which was at least 20 km away. The family was then asked to take her to Nashik Civil Hospital, which has an ICU facility as well as specialists.
On her way to the Nashik Civil Hospital, the ambulance had to be driven at a low speed. Asha died post-noon on her way to the hospital. Palghar MP Hemant Savra condoled her death and said a 200-bed hospital has been approved for Jawhar, and the work is expected to begin soon.
