New Delhi: Today is the birth anniversary of Maharana Pratap, one of the bravest Rajput rulers in India who ruled Mewar in Rajasthan. Born in 1540, Maharana Pratap was the 13th King of Mewar and Chittor was its capital. Maharana Pratap’s father was the 12th ruler of the Mewar dynasty who founded Udaipur. This year, it is the 482nd birth anniversary of the ruler. Maharana Pratap devoted his entire life to the cause of the country. He is known as a fearless warrior who had put up stiff resistance against foreign invaders.
In 2007, a statue of Maharana Pratap was built in the Parliament of India as a symbol of heroism, the spirit of freedom pride and valour. The day is observed as a public holiday in some states such as Rajasthan, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. On this day, schools, colleges and government offices remain closed.

Maharana Pratap passed away at the age of at 56 after an injury in a hunting accident at Chavand on 19 January 1597. On his death bed, he asked his son Maharana Amar Singh-I to win back Chittor . However, later he accepted the supremacy of the Mughals and entered Chittor. The king shared a special bond with his loyal horse, Chetak.
