Let’s See How Fast Courts...: Cong’s Renuka Chowdhury To File Defamation Case Against PM Modi Over 'Surpanakha' Jibe

Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury to file a defamation suit against PM Narendra Modi over the 'Suparnakha' jibe in 2018 after a Surat court found Rahul Gandhi guilty for his Modi 'surname' remark.

Rahul Gandhi Case: A court battle is on cards as Congress leader and former Union Minister Renuka Chowdhury is preparing to file a defamation suit against PM Narendra Modi over the 'Suparnakha' remark in Parliament in 2018. This comes after a Surat court on Thursday held Rahul Gandhi guilty of his remark on Modi 'surname' comment and sentenced him to a two-year jail term.

Now, Congres' Renuka Chowdhury took to Twitter to post the video of the moment when PM Modi linked her laughter to Hidnu epci Ramayana. She wrote, "This classless megalonaniac referred to me as Surpanakha on the floor of the house. I will file a defamation case against him. Let's see how fast courts will act now..(sic)."

The incident took place in 2018 when PM Modi sarcastically said, "Meri aapse vinti hai Renuka ji ko kuch mat kahiye. Ramayan serial ke baad aisi hansi sunne ka saubhagya aaj jaake mila hai (I request you to let Renuka ji continue. After the Ramayana serial, we got the privilege of hearing this kind of laughter only today.)"

Congress is planning to hold a solidarity march against the Surat court verdict which sentenced Rahul Gandhi to two years imprisonment in a defamation case over his 'Modi surname' remark made in 2019. There is also a meeting of opposition parties followed by a protest at Vijay Chowk.  

Congress has also called an urgent meeting of its steering committee members, PCC presidents, CLP leaders and frontal organization chiefs at party headquarter in Delhi at 5 PM today, ANI reported. It added that party president Mallikarjun Kharge will preside over the meeting.

Party general secretary KC Venugopal on Thursday said, as per ANI, that Congress is mulling taking out a solidarity march against the verdict. 

Party MP Jairam Ramesh said that at 10 AM on Friday, some opposition parties will meet to discuss over Rahul Gandhui’s sentence and then will hold a protest at Vijay Chowk. Ramesh said that they have also sought time from President Droupadi Murmu. 

On Thursday, a Surat court sentenced Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to two years imprisonment in a defamation case filed against him over his 'Modi surname' remark made in 2019. He had made the remark during an election rally for Lok Sabha elections.
