The Supreme Court on Monday extended an interim bail granted to Ashish Mishra son of Minister of State in Ministry of Home affairs Ajay Kumar Mishra till next date of hearing in connection with the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence case.
A bench presided by Justice Surya Kant heard the case today.
Earlier while granting interim bail to Mishra, the court imposed certain conditions on him. The top court ordered that Mishra could not stay in the state of Uttar Pradesh or Delhi-NCR and he will have to inform the court about his location. The court further said that any attempt by him or his family to influence witnesses would lead to cancellation of his bail. The court also made Mishra surrender his passport.
During the farmers protests, in October, 2021, eight people were killed in Lakhimpur Kheri District's Tikunia after violence erupted while a group of farmers were protesting against the then UP Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya's visit.
Mishra's SUV allegedly mowed down four farmers during the protest. According to FIR filed by Uttar Pradesh, Mishra was seated in the car while the incident took place.
On Monday, section 144 was imposed at Delhi-Uttar Pradesh Borders as farmers again took to streets to protest demanding a law guaranteeing Minimum Support Price (MSP), which was one of the conditions they agreed to end the 2021 protests against now repealed farm laws. The protesting farmers also seek "justice" for victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri Violence.
