New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders sat on a ‘dharna’ in Sitapur’s Biswan on Tuesday after being denied permission by the police to visit Lakhimpur Kheri to meet the family members of the deceased farmers.

This comes after a series of arrests and detention of the political leaders, including Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other leaders of the grand old party.

AAP MP Sanjay Singh posted on Twitter some pictures of his party leaders staging the ‘dharna’ on a road.

“Leader of Opposition in Punjab Harpal Singh Cheema, party's Punjab co-incharge Raghav Chadha and MLA Baljinder Kaur, Kultar Singh, Amarjit Sandhawa, UP president Sabhajit Singh have been arrested in Lakhimpur Police Lines,” he tweeted with the pictures.

The AAP MP had earlier in the day urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Lakhimpur Kheri along with the leaders of all political parties and meet the family members of the aggrieved farmers there.

The opposition parties have been lambasting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh over the Lakhimpuri Kheri incident where eight people were killed after violence erupted on Sunday.

The Uttar Pradesh government has restricted everyone to visit the site as Section 144 had been imposed in the area on Sunday night.
