Kumbh Mela 2019: Lakhs of devotes have flocked to Prayagraj ahead of the pious festival of Makar Sankranti, to take a holy dip in the waters of Sangam which is the confluence of the River Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati.
Date of Makar Sankranti:
The festival usually falls on January 14th but this year it will be celebrated on January 15. The Sun God enters a different zodiac sign “Makara” (Capricorn astronomical position) on this day. It is also the harvest season for farmers. The Kumbh Mela will also commence from the same day and will continue till March 4.
Shahi Snan schedule:
Taking bath in the holy Sangam, on the day of Makar Sankranti is considered of utmost importance. With the Ardh Kumbh Mela being organised this year, the day has gained ever more significance.
First Shahi Snan (holy dip) by different Akharas will take place on January 15 on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, along with procession. The second Shahi Snan will take place on Mauni Amavasya (February 4) and the third will take place on Basant Panchami (February 10).
