Kolkata: A fire broke out on the fifth floor of a high-rise office building in the posh Park Street here Monday, reports said. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported in the mishap that occurred at about 11.10 am on the fifth floor of the multi-storied building called Apeejay House. Ten fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the flames. Rescue officials made attempts to evacuate the building, which comprises of several corporate offices and headquarters of the Apeejay Surendra Group.


"Initially, light smoke was seen around 11 am, but by 11.30 flames were seen gushing out of windows with thick black smoke," eyewitnesses told news agency PTI.

Last month, patients at Kolkata Medical College had to be frantically moved to a safer place after fire engulfed a pharmacy store in the ground floor of the building. No one was injured in the accident. In September, major fire broke out in the Bagree market. It took over 30 hours for fire fighting personnel to curtail the blaze.
