The controversy sparked after Kalyan Banerjee, TMC MP, while addressing a public rally in Howrah referring to the Hathras rape case in Uttar Pradesh said, "Sita was lucky to be abducted by Ravan."
“Sita told Ram that had she been taken by his (Ravan) chele (disciples), she would have faced a similar fate as the rape victim of Hathras did,” he said.
Following Banerjee’s comments Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), youth wing of BJP, member Ashish Jaiswal filed a complaint against him.
“Words used by Kalyan Banerjee about ‘Sita Maa’ have hurt the sentiments of Hindus. Thus, I went and complained. Bengalis are hurt by what Kalyan Banerjee said. He also hurt the members of the BJP. I want him to apologise,” Ashish Jaiswal said.
