A woman employee of the Uttar Pradesh was killed after she was hit by a truck and dragged for nearly three kilometres on Wednesday in the Banda district. The incident comes just four days after a Delhi woman was killed in a similar manner after being dragged under a car for 12 km.
Wednesday's incident occurred in the Mawai Buzurg village in Banda. According to the UP Police, the woman was on a scooter at the time of the incident. After the truck hit the scooter, the woman fell down and got stuck under the truck. The truck, however, did not stop and continued on for 3 km and halted only when it caught fire due to the woman being stuck.
In a similar incident, Anjali Singh was killed on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday after being hit and dragged by a car in Delhi's Sultanpuri area. The victim's friend, Nidhi, who was riding pillion at the time of the accident, claimed that the deceased was drunk at the time and had insisted on riding the two-wheeler. However, autopsy report of the victim did not show any trace of alcohol in her blood.
Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal on Wednesday slammed Nidhi for allegedly defaming the 20-year-old victim. Maliwal questioned Nidhi on why she had kept silent till the police traced her on the basis of footage from CCTV cameras.
She said, "Anjali's friend has put the blame on her. She was with Anjali when the accident happened. She left the spot and went home. Didn't she feel the need to inform (the) police or Anjali's family about what had happened?
"She could have followed the car that was dragging Anjali, who must have been crying for help. She could have done something so that Anjali's life could have been saved. What kind of friend is she," Maliwal asked.
The incident has sparked a nationwide outrage including people in the national capital who are questioning the police’s apparent lack of commitment to make the city’s roads safer for residents.
