New Delhi: Congress President Sonia Gandhi has called an urgent meeting with AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal on Tuesday to discuss the Congress Presidential polls, which is to be held in October. KC Venugopal was currently part of the Rahul Gandhi-led 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' which has reached Pattanakkad, Alappuzha, reported news agency ANI.






This development takes place after Shashi Tharoor's candidature for the presidential polls was given a go-ahead by the party president on Monday. As per a report by ANI, Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi gave the former Union Minister the nod to run for the post of party president. 


Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has emerged as the other possible candidate for Congress president election, as per media reports. However, Gehlot's candidacy is yet to be confirmed officially.


Meanwhile, the Rajasthan unit of Congress passed a resolution on Saturday calling Rahul Gandhi to return to the President post from which he resigned after the 2019 Lok Sabha election debacle.

Amid the names being floated for Congress top post, Jairam Ramesh tweeted on Tuesday that "anybody can run in the presidential polls" and that "nobody, especially the party's leadership," needs "anybody's nod."


Taking to Twitter, Ramesh stated: "Entire party is immersed in making #BharatJodoYatra a success. Even so, it’s important to reiterate that any member is welcome to contest for Congress President. This is a democratic & transparent process. Nobody needs anybody's nod to contest, especially that of party leadership."
