New Delhi: Kashmiri human rights activist Khurram Parvez was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday in Srinagar in connection with a terror funding case, reported ANI. The NIA raided Parvez's residence and office in Sonwar and Amira Kadal in Srinagar and later arrested him under various sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
The raid was conducted jointly by the NIA, Jammu Kashmir Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force.
Parvez is the chairperson of the Asian Federation Against Involuntary Disappearances (AFAD) and the programme coordinator of the Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS). JKCCS is a federation for activists working in Jammu and Kashmir, and was founded by lawyer and activist Parvez Imroz in 2000.
The NIA had raided Khurram Parvez's residence and office in October last year along with other activists and journalists in relation to another case. In 2016, Parvez was booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA) following widespread protests after the killing of militant commander Burhan Wani in 2016. He was released after 76 days in prison.
Two days before his arrest, Parvez was barred from travelling to Geneva where he was scheduled to address the United Nations Human Rights Council.
