CHENNAI: M Karunanidhi, DMK chief and former Tamil Nadu chief minister, died on Tuesday evening after a prolonged illness, the Kauveri Hospital, where he was admitted, said. "With deep anguish, we announce the demise of our beloved Kalaignar M Karunanidhi at 6.10 pm on August 7, the hospital said. Karunanidhi was admitted to the Kauveri Hospital hospital on July 28 following a dip in his blood pressure and he was under treatment in the Intensive Care Unit ever since.

  • In a statement, Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan said as there were several cases pending in the Madras High Court over the burial of leaders at the Marina Beach, the government was not able to allot space near the Annadurai memorial. According to her, Chief Minister K. Palaniswami said two acres land would be allotted for Karunanidhi's burial near Gandhi Mandapam on Sardar Patel Road which already houses memorials for K. Kamaraj and others.
