Bengaluru: Hours after reporting 2,479 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, the Karnataka government announced a weekend curfew in the state from Friday 10 pm till Monday 5 am every week. 


"Weekend curfew to be imposed from 10 pm of Friday to 5 am of Monday in the entire state, in view of rising Covid-19 cases," Karnataka minister R Ashoka announced while speaking to reporters.


While the weekend curfew will be imposed across the state, essential commodities and hotels will function without any interruption.


The Karnataka government also announced that all theatres, malls, pubs and bars in the state will be allowed to operate at 50 per cent capacity and no gatherings will be allowed at public places in view of the rising Covid-19 cases.

The minister also said that schools in Bengaluru will be shut for all students, barring those from Class 10 and 12, for two weeks from January 6.  


The decision to announce the new curbs comes after Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai chaired a meeting of the Covid expert committee on Tuesday evening.


Karnataka Covid Tally


Daily Coronavirus cases in the state have seen a steady surge in the past few days. After reporting 289 infections on December 27, Karnataka reported 1,290 cases on Monday, and the tally shot up to 2,479 cases on Tuesday.
