Karnataka building collapse: An under-construction building at Kumareshwar Nagar in Dharwad district of Karnataka collapsed on Tuesday afternoon. Two people have reportedly lost his life, while several others are feared trapped under the debris. The rescue operation is underway and five people have been extricated, so far. As many as 10 ambulances and five fire tenders have been engaged to carry out rescue and relief operations, while those trapped are being rushed to the hospital.


The building came crashing down, triggering panic among neighbours and passers-by, a police official said.  "Two have died while some 30 to 40 people are trapped," PTI quoted a police officer at Dharwad police station.

The cause of the building collapse is also not known yet. However, as per the report by TOI, the construction work was going on on the third floor of the building, while as many as 60 shops on the first and second floors were rented out.

The incident took place in Kumareshwara Nagar area of the district. As per the reports, 6 people are injured and around 40 people are believed to be trapped in the debris of the five-storey building.

Following the disaster, chief minister HD Kumaraswamy took to Twitter and said the chief secretary has been directed to send additional resources and expert rescuers to Dharwad by a special flight. “Shocked to learn about the collapse of an under-construction building in Dharwad. I have instructed the Chief Secretary to supervise rescue operations,” Kumaraswamy said.


As per the report by ANI, Basavraj Nigadi, Gangadhar Shintre, Ravi Sobrad are the owners of building that collapsed today. One of the owners Gangadhar Shintre is father-in-law of Congress leader Vinay Kulkani.
