New Delhi: Thousands of people took out a protest rally in Udaipur and shopkeepers downed shutters in Jaipur on Thursday in protest against the gruesome murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal, news agency PTI reported. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot visited the family of the victim and said that he wanted the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to file the charge sheet in a fast-track court as soon as possible in order to punish the culprits.

Notably, Kanhaiya Lal was killed on Tuesday by two men who posted a video of the incident claiming responsibility for the “beheading”.

As per reports, Kanhaiya Lal had earlier told the local police that he received threats over a social media post shared from his account, apparently “supporting” BJP leader Nupur Sharma’s remarks on Prophet Mohammad.

• CM Gehlot, accompanied by the party's state chief Govind Singh Dotasra, Revenue minister Ramlal Jat, DGP ML Lather and other leaders, visited the victim’s family on Thursday.


• “The National Investigation Agency (NIA) should take up this case in a fast-track court. The charge sheet should be filed as soon as possible so that punishment can be awarded,” PTI quoted the CM as saying.


• Curfew remained clamped in seven police station areas across Udaipur. However, police eased restrictions with the organisers -- the Sarv Hindu Samaj -- saying they wanted to hold a “silent march.” But, as they marched from Town Hall to the Collectorate, some protesters raised slogans such as "Jai Jai Shri Ram", "Madarse Band Karo" (close down madrassas), "Hinduon Ki Hatya Band Karo" (end murder of Hindus), and "Rajasthan Sarkar Neend Se Jago" (wake up, Rajasthan government).


• A scuffle was reported during the rally, but police later said it was peaceful.


• The markets remained shut after a ‘bandh’ call given by a traders’ body and the Vishva Hindu Parishad in Jaipur. Apart from Jaipur, markets in Khatipura, Vaishali Nagar, Rajapark, Tonk Road, Bajaj Nagar, Malviya Nagar, Sanganer and other areas also remained closed.


• Acting on reports of communal tension and some stray incidents of violence in Udaipur, security arrangements have been stepped up, with two officers of the additional director general rank and a deputy inspector general camping in the city to monitor the situation, police officials said.


• Police have nabbed Riaz Akhtari and Ghouse Mohammad, the two men seen in the video clip of the murder. According to police, at least one of them has links with a Pakistan-based organisation.
