'Freedom Given To Us In Gandhi's Begging Bowl': Kangana Ranaut Responds Amid Flak Over 'Azaadi' Remark

Stoking up a fresh controversy, Kangana, who recently won the Padma Shri award, the fourth-highest civilian honour in the country, targeted the Congress party in her interview with Times Now.

New Delhi: After kicking the firestorm with her remarks over how India attained its freedom in 2014 while the freedom in 1947 was nothing but "bheek" or alms by Britishers, an official complaint was filed against Actor Kangana Ranaut by the National executive chairman of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Preethi Menon.

Known for her provocative comments, Kangana Ranaut's recent remarks on the freedom movement have irked various politicians across the spectrum, including BJP MP Varun Gandhi, among the host of social media users.

While calling her remarks "seditious and inflammatory," AAP Preethi Menon said, "The AAP strongly condemns the derogatory statement made by Ranaut- claiming that India's independence of 1947 was "bheek" and not real independence."

Reacting to her comments, Congress's Gaurav Pandhi on Thursday tweeted, "The RSS could never accept the fact that their British masters were forced to leave in 1947. Their slavery knew no bounds. No wonder they didn't hoist the tricolour for half a century. The return of slavery in 2014 was their 'independence'. Kangana Ranaut is just one of them."

Even with Twitter blocking her official account, the ever-combatant Kangana Ranaut, in response to the remarks made on her, hit backs through her official Instagram account. She writes on her Insta story, "Even though I clearly mentioned 1857 revolution first freedom fight which was curbed... which lead to more atrocities and cruelties from the British and almost a century later freedom was given to us in Gandhi's begging bowl... Ja aur roo ab."

"If we get freedom as a 'bheek', is it even freedom? What the British left behind in the name of Congress... They were the extension of the British...," she said, asserting that the "real independence" was attained in 2014.

In response to the statement, Congress' Salman Nizami on his official Twitter handle wrote, "This statement is an insult to our freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India's Independence. Shame on you Kangana!"
