Makkal Needhi Maiam chief Kamal Haasan on Saturday said that he would ‘definitely’ contest the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, thereby putting an end to all speculations over him contesting the polls.
“I will definitely contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections,” the actor-turned-politician said in probably the first confirmation of his intent to contest the elections. "I would fight elections. A committee would soon start choosing candidates," he said.
Kamal Haasan also said that he would not ally with any party that "tries to change Tamil Nadu's DNA". Last month, on his 64th birthday, Mr Haasan had announced that his party was ready for by-elections to the 20 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu, whenever they are held.
Haasan had last week said his party has started gearing up for the general election but maintained his silence over the possibilities of forming an alliance with other parties. Haasan has been touring Tamil Nadu as part of his efforts to strengthen his new party.
Asked if he would go it alone or ally with other parties for next year’s Parliament election and bypolls to 20 assembly constituencies, he said, “Such things cannot be said now and it cannot be disclosed to the media. Some sections of media are imagining things.”
