New Delhi: The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a plea for a special investigation team (SIT) probe into the murder of rationalist MM Kalburgi. The plea has been filed by his wife Umadevi Kalburgi. The hearing has been scheduled for February 26.

The Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Rohinton Nariman said - "This is a very serious case, we will hear it,". The bench said it will not adjourn the scheduled hearing and asked the parties to complete the pleading before the next date of hearing.

"We are not going to adjourn. Complete your pleadings, be ready," the bench said.

Rationalist MM Kalburgi was murdered on August 30, 2015 and the investigations which are still on havent been able to make any major breakthrough. According to the details provided by the police soon after the incident, two unidentified youths knocked on the door of Kalburgi's home at 8:40 am. The men claimed that they were Kalburgi's students when Kalburgi's wife answered the door.

A Bench of Justices Rohinton Nariman and Vineet Saran asked the State governments to complete their pleadings in the case and "be ready".

On December 11, during the previous hearing, another Bench of the apex court led by Justice U.U. Lalit had prima facie found a "common thread" running through the four deaths and conveyed it's feeling to the CBI.

That was the first time the Supreme Court had indicated that there may be a possibility of a common link among the four cases which had sent ripples across the nation and was considered in some quarters as a silencing of dissenting voices.
