New Delhi: Delhi Police on Friday held a press conference to update the status of investigation conducted by it in the controversial Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) violence case which took place on January 5. While speaking to reporters, Delhi police official said that investigation is been done by crime branch and is still underway. Delhi Police PRO, MS Randhawa said that usually update on investigation is given once it is completed, but in this case it is being done in middle as several rumours have been spread regarding the incidents.

Followed by Randhawan, DCP/Crime, Delhi Police Dr. Joy Tirkey told media that three cases have been registered till now and they are being investigated by the department. Delhi Police also released images of the suspects, caught on the CCTV camera creating ruckus and damaging the property of JNU campus.

"JNU administration decided to go for online registration of students from Jan 1-5. JNU Students' Union including Students Front of India, All India Students Federation, All India Students Association and Democratic Students Federation were against it," Tirkey said.

The DGP also said that as off now, no suspect has been detained, but we will begin to interrogate the suspects soon. "A large majority of students want to register but the mentioned groups and their sympathizers are not allowing students to do the same," he said.

While explaining the scenario, Tirkey also said that the incident was not just limited to December 5 violence, but attacks that took place on December 3 and 4. Delhi police have accused as many as nine people of igniting violence in the campus including JNU Students Union President Aishe Ghosh.

"On January 5, at around 3:30 pm, SFI and three other groups (AISF, SIDA, DSF) attacked students at the Periyar hostel. The JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh was also there, it was caught on camera," DGP Crime Branch said.

"Those identified include -- Chunchun Kumar, Pankaj Mishra, Aishe Ghosh (JNUSU President elect), Waskar Vijay, Sucheta Talukraj, Priya Ranjan, Dolan Sawant, Yogendra Bhardwaj, Vikas Patel," said DCP.

"Majority of students want to register for winter semester but some Left wing students' bodies not allowing them," Tirkey adding that in JNU's Periyar hostel, specific rooms were targeted.

Union Minister Smriti Irani's tweet after Delhi Police press conference:

JNUSU President Aishe Ghosh, however, rejected the claims of Delhi police and said that she also has evidences of how she was attacked. "Delhi Police can do their inquiry. I also have evidence to show how I was attacked," she said.

" I have full faith in the law & order of this country that investigation will be fair. I will get justice. But why is Delhi Police bias? My complaint has not been filed as an FIR. I have not carried out any assault," Ghosh said.

JNU witnessed widespread violence on Sunday evening in which two office-bearers of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU), including President Aishe Ghosh, received injuries. While the left unions have blamed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) so far, the RSS-linked students union has blamed the Left.

The JNU has limped back to normalcy after the violence but a sense of fear still prevails in the campus.
