New Delhi: National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partner in Bihar, the Janata Dal-United on Monday condemned the violence in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and described the attack as the cowardly act of the ideologically defeated. It demanded a Supreme Court Judge-led probe into the incident.
The JD-U also accused the Vice Chancellor of being a silent spectator of the dirty games of goons.
In a statement, JD-U General Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP K.C. Tyagi said, "JD-U condemns the violent activities by the goons in the JNU campus. The way, elected office bearers of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) were attacked by outsiders, is to be condemned by all the sections of society."
He said that JNU is known for debate, dialogue and ideological differences and never for such incidents. "This is the cowardice act of ideologically defeated in the debate," Tyagi said.
Slamming the JNU Vice Chancellor, the JD-U leader said, "We strongly condemn the attitude of the JNU VC and other authorities who became silent spectators of the dirty game of the goons. Police officials too failed in performing their duties."
His remarks came a day after violence engulfed JNU as several masked individuals, both male and female, thrashed students, including girls, and teachers inside the varsity campus with wooden and metal rods.
The Rajya Sabha MP demanded a free and fair enquiry by a Supreme Court Judge and said for a fair trial the VC and other top administrators must be removed from their posts.
"We express our solidarity with the students of JNU," Tyagi added.
