New Delhi:  Two more militants have been killed in a gunfight with a joint team of Police, CRPF and Army in Sugoo Hendhama area of Shopian on Wednesday, taking the militant death toll to five in the ‘ongoing operation’ and 14 in last less than three days in the southern Kashmir district on Wednesday. Also Read| Ladakh Standoff: India, China Pull Back Armies At 3 Disputed Locations; Military Talks To Continue


"Yes, five unidentified militants have been killed in the operation, and dead bodies have been recovered. We have also recovered arms and ammunitions," IG Kashmir Vijay Kumar confirmed

This is the third major encounter in the district in less than a week. So far 20 terrorists have been killed in the month of June, the identity of the slain militants is yet to be ascertained.

It is pertinent to mention that a total of 14 terrorists have been killed all alone in the Shopian district since 7th June including two commanders. While the total number of terrorists killed since January 2020 is 106 now, of which 55 have been killed since March.

Meanwhile, Mobile Internet has been suspended in the Shopian district for precautionary measures.

Earlier, a joint team of Police, Army's 44RR, and CRPF launched a cordon-and-search-operation in Sugoo Hendhama.

As the joint team approached the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists fired upon them. The fire was retaliated by the joint team, triggering off an encounter.
