New Delhi: Engineering aspirants will get only two chances to clear the entrance test this year, instead of four.

According to the official information from the National Testing Agency (NTA), it has been decided to conduct the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE-Main) in April and May. The ministry of education had last year decided to increase the number of attempts after which JEE Main was held in February, March, April, and August-September last year. More than 26 lakh candidates had written the entrance test in 2021.

JEE Main, the multiple choice, computer-based test is an entrance exam for getting admission to the engineering institutes across the country and also securing a rank to appear in JEE Advanced, the entrance test for the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).

The number of attempts in JEE Main was initially increased from one to two in 2019, that was further increased to four in 2021, and the best of the four attempts was considered to be the final score of the candidate.

According to sources close to The Times of India, the number of attempts was increased to four last year due to the Covid second wave. However, since there has been an improvement in the Covid scenario, it has been decided to conduct the exam twice this year. The registration process will start by the end of this month.

The application process for JEE Main 2022 will include steps such as the registration, application, image upload and fee payment. In view of the Covid pandemic, NTA had changed JEE Main examination pattern to accommodate the students who have studied under different school boards that changed the syllabus.

Meanwhile, as per the discussion between the education ministry and the ministry of health, the medical entrance, National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) NEET-UG is set to take place in June or July this year.
