A controversial proposal by JD(S) legislator MT Krishnappa in Karnataka Assembly on Tuesday sparked outrage and a heated debate over the state’s financial policies and welfare initiatives. During the session, Krishnappa suggested that the Congress-led government should distribute two free liquor bottles per week to men, citing existing welfare schemes for women, such as Rs 2,000 monthly financial assistance, free electricity and free bus travel.
Controversial Statement
Krishnappa defended his suggestion by saying, as per ANI: "You (state government) are giving women Rs 2,000 per month, free electricity and free bus travel. Anyway, it is our money. So, those who drink should be given two bottles of liquor free every week. Let them drink. What is wrong with that?..."
His remarks immediately drew backlash, particularly from women legislators, who criticised him for generalising and making insensitive remarks. Energy Minister KJ George responded sharply, saying: "You win the election, form the government and do it. We are trying to make people drink less alcohol."

Krishnappa further fueled the controversy by claiming that many legislators consume alcohol and even took a personal dig at a former legislator’s drinking habits, as per India Today. His comments were widely criticised for being out of touch with the government’s efforts to promote responsible behaviour and reduce alcohol consumption.
Though Shakti scheme and other welfare measures has received praises, Karnataka Opposition has continuously said that the government was incurring losses due to the schemes.
