New Delhi: Three militants were killed Sunday morning in an encounter that was going on in the outskirts of Srinagar since Saturday evening. The encounter foiled a major plot of the militants in the area. An Army Jawan was also injured in the 18-hour gunfight, police said Sunday.

A search operation was launched by the police and security forces at Mujgund area on Bandipora road on Saturday. The operation that started with security forces acting on inputs turned into an encounter when the militants targeted the search party.

The security forces had gunned down two terrorists on Saturday.

The injured Army jawan was taken to hospital for treatment. The bodies of the militants who have been decimated, have been retrieved from the site of the encounter and arms and ammunition have been recovered from the site.

Jammu and Kashmir police informed that the three terrorists who were neutralised have been identified as Mudasir Rashid Parray and Saqib Bilal Sheikh of Hajin Bandipora and a Pakistani identified as Ali. They were affiliated with LeT.


“People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitised and cleared of all the explosives materials if any," a police spokesperson was quoted as saying by PTI.

Meanwhile, clashes between groups of youth and security forces have erupted in the area. Authorities have suspended mobile Internet services in the city as a precautionary measure, a police official said.
