A terrorist was killed while a police personnel and army jawan were injured in an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's Raesi, news agency ANI reported. The gunbattle ensued at Reasi on the basis of specific input regarding the presence of two terrorists. Police and Army are carrying out the joint operation, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP Mukesh) Singh informed, as per ANI.
Earlier it was reported that a policeman had been injured in the gunbattle and later, an Army jawan was also injured in the encounter.
This comes after a major tragedy was narrowly averted with the timely detection of a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district on Sunday. The IED, concealed inside a tiffin box, was discovered lying on the roadside near a culvert by the army’s road opening party at Sangpur village along the Jammu-Poonch National Highway at approximately 4.45 am, news agency PTI reported officials as saying.
Jammu-based defence PRO Lt Col Suneel Bartwal stated that three teams from the nearest Army camp immediately moved to the location. They swiftly established a motor vehicle check post at Kallar and Balavenue after uncovering the IED. Simultaneously, the local police were alerted and integrated into the operation. Additionally, a bomb disposal team was dispatched to the site, successfully identifying and neutralising the IED by approximately 8.15 am.
Traffic on the busy highway remained suspended for over three hours following the detection of the IED, officials said, as per PTI. The device was later destroyed in a controlled explosion without causing any harm. Authorities have initiated a case, and a comprehensive investigation is underway to identify and apprehend the suspected terrorists who planted the IED on the highway with the intent to cause a devastating explosion, the officials added.
