New Delhi: Six persons were killed while four were injured on Saturday evening when a car skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district, police said. Expressing profound sorrow over the casualties, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha directed the district administration to extend assistance to the affected persons
According to news agency ANI, Doda Deputy Commissioner Harvinder Singh said, "A car which was travelling on Thathri Phagsoo road slid down a gorge around 8-8:30 PM today .10 people were travelling in the car. 6 people have died. Injured are being treated at Government Hospital Doda."
Station House Officer of Thathri Police Station Suresh Gautam who led the rescue operation said a four-year-old girl, was killed in the accident, news agency PTI reported. The police have identified four of the deceased individuals as Mukhtiyar Ahmad, Riyaz Ahmad, Mohd Rafi, and Ireena Begum. Among the casualties was a four-year-old girl, the daughter of Mohd Amir and Saima. Additionally, Sufiyan Sheikh and two other girls sustained injuries in the incident.
Expressing grief, LG Sinha said, "I am deeply grieved and shocked at the tragic loss of lives and injuries resulting from the unfortunate road accident at Phagsoo, Doda today." He conveyed his condolences to the members of the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured, reported PTI.
"I have issued instructions to district administration to provide all necessary assistance, as provided in rule, to the affected persons,” the LG added.
Ex-CM Ghulam Nabi Azad Calls For Heightened Measures To Curb Accidents
Democratic Progressive Azad Party chairman and former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad also expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident.
"Devastated by the tragic loss of lives in the Thathri-Kathawa road accident near Wanipora, with 5 (fatal) casualties. Urging the government for compensation and intensified measures to curb the rising accidents in Chenab Valley!", Azad wrote on X.
Azad called for heightened measures to address the escalating incidents of accidents in the Chenab Valley region.
