Election Officers Ready Contingency Plan Near LoC In Poonch Ahead of Phase 5 Polls

Elections officers in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district have prepared a contingency plan to ensure the safety of polling officials and voters amid potential cross-border firing during phase 5 polling of the Lok Sabha elections.

Poonch District Election Officer Yasin Choudhary outlined the plan, stating that 474 polling stations are located in the district, with 54 stations falling within the 0 to 5 km long-arm shelling range from the Line of Control (LoC). Over two dozen stations are within the 0 to 1 km short-arm shelling range, and around 12 are situated across the fence.

"We have prepared a contingency plan, which is a standard practice for any election," Choudhary told ANI. "For all these polling stations, there is always a possibility of shelling exchange, and the SOP requires such a thing... We have the provisions for movable bunkers as well along with designated alternate polling stations."

In response to the threat of militant attacks and shelling, 167 additional companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been deployed in Poonch and Rajouri districts ahead of the May 25 elections in the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha constituency, according to the Indian Express.

Phase 5 of the election will see polling in 5 seats in Bihar, 1 seat in Jammu and Kashmir, 3 seats in Jharkhand, 1 in Ladakh, 13 seats in Maharashtra, 5 seats in Odisha, 14 seats in Uttar Pradesh, and 7 seats in West Bengal. A total of 695 candidates from 8 states and union territories are contesting in this phase.

The Lok Sabha constituencies set to undergo polling in the 2024 elections across five phases include Baramulla, Srinagar, Anantnag-Rajouri, Udhampur, and Jammu. The Baramulla constituency, which will vote in the fifth phase, is a pivotal battleground where voters will determine their parliamentary representation.
