Unidentified terrorists on Sunday shot and seriously injured a police officer near Srinagar's Eidgah neighbourhood, news agency PTI reported. According to the Jammu and Kashmir police, terrorists opened fire on a police officer named Masood in the Eidgah neighbourhood of Srinagar, leaving him in a pool of blood. The injured cop was promptly sent to a local hospital, where his condition is described as serious.

Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), Kashmir Zone Police stated: "Terrorists fired upon & injured Inspector Masroor Ahmad near Eidgah, Srinagar. He was immediately shifted to hospital for treatment. Preliminary investigation reveals that a pistol was used in this terror crime. Area cordoned off, case registered."

Immediately following the incident, police and the paramilitary CRPF rushed to the scene and roped off the area in order to apprehend the perpetrators.

Masroor Ahmad Wani, the officer, was playing cricket at the Eidgah playground when the lone terrorist opened fire from close range, striking him in the eye, abdomen, and hand.

On Sundays, the Eidgah pitch is generally packed with youthful cricket players.

Wani's friends pursued the terrorist, but he shot in the air before fleeing through adjacent lanes, according to them.

Wani, believed to be in his late thirties, was transported to a hospital in Soura where he was receiving surgery, according to officials, who added that his condition was severe.

He had been posted at the district police lines.

The incident has been claimed by the Resistance Front, a shadow cell of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba terror group.

However, officials stated that they had received some information about the terrorist who carried out the assault and that an operation was underway to apprehend him.

In a series of strikes in 2021 and 2022, extremists killed many police officers, most of whom were off-duty. However, until today's attack, there has been a decrease in such incidents this year.
