IRCTC cancellation charges: Have you cancelled your IRCTC next generation e-ticket due to last moment emergency in the recent past? The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has made some changes in the online cancellation of e-tickets via its official website- irctc.co.in or mobile app. IRCTC refunds the amount to the customer after confirmation of the cancellation to the account from which booking transaction took place, after deducting the applicable charges. The refund is processed as per extant railway refund rules. The IRCTC has detailed rules of several ticket cancellation scenarios. That is why it is important for customers to be aware of all these ticket cancellation charges and rules in order to avoid any loss. Here’s all you need to know about the refund options available with IRCTC over the cancellation of tickets in different scenarios:


Cancellation of train tickets 48 hours before the scheduled departure of the train

Cancellation charge for first AC/executive class tickets – Rs 240
Cancellation charge for 2 AC/first class tickets – Rs 200
Cancellation charge for 3 AC/ AC chair car/ 3 AC economy class tickets – Rs 180
Cancellation charge for sleeper class tickets – Rs 120
Cancellation charge for second class tickets – Rs 60

Cancellation of train tickets 48 to 12 hours before the scheduled departure of the train

In case you want to cancel your train tickets 48 to 12 hours before the departure time, it will cost you 25 per cent of the booking amount.

Cancellation of Tatkal tickets

It is very important to know that no refund will be granted by Indian Railways in case you cancel your train tickets booked under the tatkal quota.  However, in case, the train is delayed by three or more hours, passengers can claim refund by filing the TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt)

Cancellation charges on confirmed tickets in less than 12 hours and up to four hours before the scheduled departure of a train or up to chart preparation, whichever is earlier, is 50 per cent of the total fare. This is, however, subject to minimum cancellation charges.

It also crucial to note that no refund of fare shall be granted on RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) e-tickets is case the ticket is not cancelled or TDR is not filed online up to thirty minutes before the scheduled departure of the train.

Here’s how to cancel IRCTC online tickets before chart preparation:

i. In case the user wishes to cancel his/her e-ticket before chart preparation, it can be done by logging on to irctc.co.in. The ticket cancellation option is under 'My Transactions' tab.

ii. User then needs to click on 'Booked Ticket History' link on the menu bar

iii. The booked tickets will be displayed. Select the ticket which you want to cancelled and click on 'Cancel Ticket'. Initiate the cancellation by selecting the passengers to be cancelled. User has to select only those passengers who are to be cancelled in case of partial cancellation of ticket. Select the check box before the traveler's name and click on 'Cancel Ticket' button

iv. Confirmation pop up will display, select the 'OK' button to confirm the cancellation

v. On successful cancellation, cancellation charge is deducted and the refund amount to be refunded will be displayed on screen. Confirmation message for cancellation will be sent user’s mobile number (provided at the time of booking). Confirmation mail for cancellation will be sent on email ID (registered with IRCTC User ID)

Here’s how to file Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR)

i. Go to the official IRCTC website – irctc.co.in

ii. After logging in go to ‘My Transaction’ under ‘My Account’

iii. Choose the ‘file TDR’ option.

iv. On clicking here, the reason for ticket cancellation will be asked

v. Mention the reason and click on the ‘file TDR’ button
