New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi remembered former prime minister Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary today and asserted that he will not allow the nation "to fall apart."

"Grandmother, I am carrying both your love and values in my heart. I will not allow India for which you have sacrificed your life to fall apart," Rahul Gandhi tweeted in Hindi.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior party leader Sonia Gandhi and other Congress on Monday paid tribute to former prime minister Indira Gandhi at Shakti Sthal.

In a tweet, Kharge wrote, "My tributes to the first woman prime minister of India, Indira Gandhi ji, on her martyrdom day. Be it agriculture, economy or military power, Indira ji's contribution in making India a strong nation is incomparable".

The Congress remembered Indira Gandhi's contributions as prime minister, recalling the liberation of Bangladesh and ushering in the Green Revolution. "We salute her unyielding resilience & unwavering vision for the nation's development," the party wrote, also honouring Sardar Valabbhai Patel on his birth anniversary.

Indira Gandhi's Assassination

Indira Gandhi, the daughter of India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, was elected as the prime minister for the first time in 1966 after Lal Bahadur Shastri's death. She was assassinated on October 31, 1984, by two of her bodyguards in retaliation for the military action at the Golden Temple as part of Operation Blue Star.

She was the president of the Indian National Congress before being elected as the prime minister.

She had also served as the Minister of Information and Broadcast in the Lal Bahadur Shastri government. Her birth anniversary is celebrated as National Integration Day to promote peace, unity, and integration among people.

She was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1971 and was also included in the 100 powerful women list by Time Magazine.
