New Delhi: The total number of coronavirus cases in India rose to 138845 and India is now among the top 10 countries with the highest number of coronavirus cases. According to data by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University, India now stands right behind Turkey as the tenth country with a high number of Covid-19 cases. India saw a surge in the number of coronavirus cases for the fourth day in a row with 6000 new cases in 24 hours. With 154 fresh fatalities the death toll has also increased to 4021. According to the data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare the active cases today have reached 77103.
This is coming after a similar increase in cases was recorded on Sunday. 6,767 new cases were reported in 24 hours and the tally yesterday was 1,31, 868. This was happening for the third consecutive day.
The Health Ministry maintains that the recovery rate in India remains high and according to data 57720 have recovered from the disease.
New cases in many states
Many states which had earlier no coronavirus cases recorded fresh new cases such as Sikkim. Arunachal Pradesh also reported one fresh case, while Assam reported 64 new cases. A rise was also seen in the Union territory Puducherry and Goa which had enjoyed the green tag so far, the cases have risen to 66.
Maharashtra continued to lead in the number of coronavirus cases and now has a total of 50231. According to a report, it recorded the highest single-day jump on Sunday with 3,041 new cases. Maharashtra PWD Minister Ashok Chavan has also reportedly tested positive for the virus. Tamil Nadu with 16277 falls in the second position and it is followed by Gujarat (14056) and Delhi (13418).
During an interaction with the BJP leader G.V.L. Narasimha Rao the Union Health Minister, Harsh Vardhan also said that as migrant workers return to their home states across the country there might be a surge in the coronavirus cases. The minister also said that the situation is being monitored closely and that India’s health infrastructure is ready to handle it.
Global tally
Globally the cases of Coronavirus continue to rise and are now reaching 55 lakhs. The data by CSSE says that the total cases around the world have reached 5,407,613. The US still leads in the number of coronavirus cases with 1,643,246. Brazil is in the second position with 363,211 cases and Russia stands in third place with 344,481 cases.
