Preparations are in full swing for the 77th independence day celebration across the country with people participating in the 'Meri Mati Mera Desh' campaign. Meanwhile, security arrangements have been beefed up in Delhi due to the independence day programme to avert any untoward incident. A full dress rehearsal of different armed forces also took place at Red Fort in the national capital where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the tricolour on August 15th.
School students in Srinagar took part in the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' rally that was organised by the Jammu and Kashmir police under the 'Meri Mati Mera Desh' campaign on Saturday.
"Meri Maati Mera Desh’ campaign is a part of the Independent Day celebrations. In this, we are spreading awareness among people about unsung heroes of our nation," Shivam Siddharth, DSP, East Srinagar said.
Delhi police has intensified the vigil across the region due to the independence day celebrations. Notably, on Saturday, Delhi Police's Special Cell arrested a 32-year-old man and seized 21 pistols from him, reported PTI. The accused, identified as Lal Singh Chadhar, a resident of Sagar in Madhya Pradesh, used to supply illegal weapons in Delhi-NCR after procuring them from Burhanpur in his home state, the police said.

Police got a tip on August 4 that Chadhar was coming near Gandhi Museum on Ring Road to deliver a consignment to one of his contacts, Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) H G S Dhaliwal said, as per PTI. Subsequently, a plan was made and at around 3.20 pm, Chadhar was apprehended and 21 pistols of .32 bore were seized from him, Dhaliwal added.
Search Operation In Jammu And Kashmir
Amid the ongoing security arrangements ahead of independence day, security forces on Saturday launched a search operation in over a dozen villages near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, officials said, quoted PTI. They said that the joint operation by the Army and police was being carried out as part of stepped-up security in the border villages ahead of Independence Day. The security forces cordoned off over a dozen villages in the Gursai area of Mendhar subdivision and a search operation was launched.
Security has been heightened across the Jammu region to thwart any attempts by terrorists to disrupt Independence Day celebrations on August 15.
