Independence Day 2022: India is celebrating 75 years of independence on Monday, August 15, 2022. The Prime Minister of India and the President of the nation have extended their wishes on the occasion of India’s 76th Independence Day.

“Greetings on this very special Independence Day. Jai Hind!” the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, wrote on Twitter, wishing the nation on Independence Day.

“I would like to extend Independence Day greetings to the armed forces, to the members of Indian missions abroad, and to the Indian diaspora who continue to make their motherland proud. My best wishes to all of you,” the President of India, Draupadi Murmu, wrote, wishing the country on the eve of Independence Day.

Murmu addressed India on the eve of Independence Day, and said the nation has helped the world discover the true potential of democracy. She also said the keyword for India today is compassion for the poor and needy, and that major economic reforms are being undertaken along with innovative welfare initiatives.

Murmu said the world has seen "a new India rising in recent years, more so after the outbreak of COVID-19".

When India won Independence, she said, many world leaders and experts were skeptical about the success of India's democratic form of government, due to poverty and illiteracy that prevailed at the time.

In her 17-minute address, the President said India will have "fully realised the dreams of our freedom fighters" by the year 2047.
