New Delhi: A low-pressure belt forming over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining south Andaman Sea is likely to bring very heavy rainfall in Pondicherry and seven districts of Tamil Nadu on December 8, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday.


As per the weather office, a trough is present from Comorin area to the north Kerala coast at 0.9 km above the mean sea level and a low-pressure area, likely to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea, by Monday, is expected to move north-westwards before concentrating into a ‘depression’ over the Southeast Bay of Bengal by Wednesday morning.


Thereafter, the ‘low-pressure area’ is likely to move west north-westwards and reach Southeast Bay of Bengal, near north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, along with adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts by December 8 morning, IMD said, adding this low-pressure area if likely to bring rainfall over the next three days.






As per the weather forecast, light to moderate rainfall is likely at a few places over South Tamil Nadu, North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area on December 5.


On December 6, light to moderate rain might occur at one or two places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area.


IMD predicted light to moderate rain in many places on December 7. Also, isolated thunderstorms and lightning is likely to occur over coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.


While light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely to occur at one or two places over interior Tamil Nadu, heavy rains are likely at isolated places in Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Pudukkottai districts.


On December 8, light to moderate rain is expected in several places with isolated thunderstorms and lightning over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal areas.


Heavy to very heavy rain likely at isolated places over Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Pudukkottai districts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, IMD said.
