Linking your Permanent Account Number aka PAN with your Aadhaar ID is important, and the Supreme Court of India has given its stamp of approval on the government’s decision to make it mandatory for every citizen of the country who owns a valid Permanent Account Number. Did you know that linking your PAN and Aadhaar is crucial to file Income Tax Returns? In Budget 2017, section 139AA was introduced in the Income Tax Act, which mandates a person to quote his/her Aadhaar Number while applying for a new Permanent Account Number or PAN Card. The same was made mandatory for filing Income Tax Returns too.

Which means, that taxpayers who had filed their ITRs for FY 2016-17 without linking their PAN with Aadhaar, need to link it in order to get their ITRs processed by the Income Tax Department. The last date to do so is 31st March 2019 for these taxpayers.

Also, the government has hinted time and again that if an individual fails to link his PAN with Aadhaar, then the PAN could become invalid.
