Guwahati: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as the 15th Chief Minister of the state of Assam today at the at the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra.


He was administered the oath by Governor Jagdish Mukhi, former CM Sarbananda Sonowal also present at the oath taking ceremony.

At the ceremony, various BJP leaders including the party's national president JP Nadda were present. Chief ministers from the north eastern states were present at the ceremony as well including, CM of Tripura Biplab Deb, Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma, Manipur CM N Biren Singh, and Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio. 


For the ceremony, Sarma chose to wear traditional Assamese attire. He was accompanied by his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarm, Sarma’s mother Mrinalini Devi, and children at the swearing-in ceremony. 


Different members of his cabinet were sworn-in soon after Sarma took his oath. 


Sarbananda Sonowal who himself proposed Sarma as the next CM along with state president Ranjeet Kumar Dass, and supported by newly elected MLA from Halflong, Nandita Gorlosa. Sarma was unanimously elected the next Chief Minister of Assam in a key meeting where Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar and party General Secretary Arun Singh were present as central observers.  


Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi congratulated the new chief minister. 






On being selected the next chief minister before the ceremony, he tweeted, "With the fragrance of Assam in my heart & love of my wonderful people in my veins, I offer my deepest gratitude to you all. I would not have been what I am had it not been for your pious faith in me. On this Day, I vow to work with & for each one of you with greater passion". 


In another tweet, he thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying, "This is the biggest day in my life, and I so fondly cherish your generous affection. I assure you we shall leave no stone unturned to carry forward your vision of taking Assam & NE to greater heights."
