Authorities stated that a dozen individuals perished and others sustained injuries in isolated events caused by intense rainfall and thunderstorms in Tonk district of Rajasthan, news agency PTI reported.
On Thursday evening, strong winds brought heavy rainfall to different parts of the district, resulting in both fatalities and property damage. A thunderstorm was recorded at Jaipur International Airport, with a top speed of 96 kmph.
In the meantime, the MeT department has issued an orange alert for various locations in the state for Friday, predicting intense precipitation and forceful thunderstorms with wind speeds ranging between 50-60 kmph. Certain areas may experience a precipitation event featuring hail as well.
According to Chinmayee Gopal, the Tonk District Collector, a total of 12 fatalities have been recorded throughout the Tonk district, with three in Tonk city, three in Niwai block, two in each of Malpura and Devli, as well as one each in Toda Rai Singh and Uniara. Gopal stated that the injured individuals have been taken to various hospitals throughout the district for treatment.
According to the district collector, there have been reports of problems with the supply of water and electricity in certain areas, and steps are being taken to rectify the situation.
The on-field personnel, who have been diligent since the night, are endeavoring to evaluate the overall damage incurred by the rain and thunderstorm. After completion of the report, individuals who meet the eligibility criteria will receive compensation in line with government regulations, she stated.
According to PC Kishan, the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) will provide aid to the departed individuals.
Weather data from the previous 24 hours up until 8:30 am on Friday indicates that Jaipur tehsil experienced 6 cm of rain. Meanwhile, the areas of Tonk's Malpura, Sikar's Lakshmangarh, Jhunjhunu's Pilani, Sawai Madhopur's Bonli, Karauli's Hindaun, Jaipur's Sambhar and Chaksu, as well as Ajmer's Sarwar, all recorded 5 cm of rainfall.
A number of locations throughout the state received between 1 and 4 cm of precipitation.
“Thunderstorms will continue in the districts of Bikaner, Jaipur, Bharatpur, Ajmer, Kota divisions on May 27 as well,” the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a weather bulletin.
“Due to the activation of another new Western Disturbance from May 28, the thunderstorms will intensify again. There is a strong possibility of an intense storm, 50 to 70 kmph strong winds, heavy rain and lightning and hailstorm at some places,” a MeT official was quoted by PTI in its report.
