Relief In Sight For Heatwave-Baked North India? Here's What The Weather Dept Says

Heatwave In India: North and Northwest India are likely to bear the brunt of the ongoing intense heatwave. Relief for North India is possible soon, according to the IMD.

The seemingly never-ending heatwave is likely to continue to bake northern and northwestern parts of India, while the northeastern parts of the country will remain cool due to the monsoon tomorrow. However, the latest IMD forecast has a tiny glimmer of hope for north India. The ongoing heatwave is the longest spell in India.

In its latest weather bulletin, the India Meteorological Department has forecast that heatwave conditions will continue in several states in north, east, and northwest India. Among the states likely to be faced with severe heatwave conditions on Wednesday is Uttar Pradesh. Heatwave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand on June 19, the IMD said in a statement.

Rains To Continue In Northeast And Bengal

Meanwhile, the sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are very likely to get isolated heavy to extremely heavy rain from June 18 to 22. Heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rain is very likely to continue over sub-Himalayan Assam and Meghalaya over the next 2 days. The Monsoon rain has caused floods in parts of Assam and Manipur. 

When Will Heatwave Start Abating In North India

The IMD said that the intense heatwave will continue in isolated parts of Jammu-Kashmir, and north Coastal Andhra Pradesh on June 18; and in north Madhya Pradesh, and north Rajasthan on June 18 & 19. The heatwave will start abating after that due to an approaching Western Disturbance towards Northwest India, the IMD said.

Delhi could get some rainfall by June 20. "A Western Disturbance as a trough in mid-tropospheric westerlies runs roughly along long. 67°E to the north of Lat. 30°N. Under its influence; isolated to scattered light rainfall with thunderstorm, lightning & gusty winds (30-40 kmph) very likely over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand during 18th-22nd and over Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan during 18th-20th June," the statement read.

There will be no significant change in maximum temperatures in Northwest India on July 19. However, the maximum temperature could come down by about 2°C on November 20 & 21 and then rise again by 2-3°C.

Earlier, the IMD had forecast that Monsoon is unlikely to arrive in Delhi before June 30.
